Age: The applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to become a firefighter. Applicants under the age of 18 may be eligible for the Explorer Program.

Legal Requirements: The applicant shall be governed by the laws, statutes, and regulations of federal, state, and local government agencies, and shall abide by the Hendron Fire Department By-Laws. An applicant shall not be a convicted felon and must have a good driving record.

Character: The applicant shall be of good moral character and show an earnest desire to serve the community. He must be willing to participate in all activities of the Fire Department and be willing to take orders from his superiors. When given an order, he shall strive to carry it out to the best of his ability or have a justifiable explanation for not doing so. He must always conduct himself in a respectable manner and shall not use abusive or profane language especially at an incident scene. Any firefighter under the influence of alcohol or drugs shall not be permitted in the fire stations or at the scene of a fire or other incident.

Approval: Upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the recruit enters a one-year probationary period. In addition to the required training, he must participate in all Fire Department activities when available, unless excused by the Chief, in order to be considered for full membership.

Section 2 – Probationary Period
Trainees: A trainee (16 to 18 years old) must meet the same qualifications as a firefighter. Trainees are not allowed to ride the fire trucks or any other emergency vehicles to dispatched incidents, nor are they allowed to go near a fire that could endanger their safety. No trainee is permitted in the fire stations except when an officer or engineer is present.

Training Requirements: A recruit must receive a total of 150 hours of state required basic firefighter training before becoming a certified firefighter and receiving his badge. A firefighter trainee must also complete the 150 hours of state required training in order to be considered for full membership upon reaching the age of eighteen (18).

Meeting Attendance: All officers, firefighters, and trainees must attend fire-training meetings on the date and time prescribed by the By-Laws. Fire training meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday nights of each month at 7:00 PM.

Continuing Training Requirements: To maintain state certification requirements, a minimum of 20 hours of state approved training is required annually. To remain an active member of the Hendron Fire Department, a minimum of 20 hours of in-house training is required annually. If an officer, firefighter, or trainee is sick or is working, he may be excused by notifying an officer prior to the meeting. Anyone having 3 or more unexcused absences in 3 months may be subject to disciplinary action by the Board of Trustees at the discretion of the Chief.

Duties: In addition to meeting attendance and training requirements, the firefighter must respond to all calls when available and participate in readying of equipment after an incident. He shall also be responsible for all work detail assignments and special assignments as directed by the Chief.
